Can Acupuncture Cure Tinnitus?
Acupuncture is a popular treatment for tinnitus sufferers, but can you really be cured by receiving this ancient Chinese medical remedy? Hopefully this article will give you the answer you’re looking for.
People who suffer from tinnitus often become frustrated in trying out different therapies, attending counseling and wearing ear devices just to find out that the ringing, hissing or any other sound in their ear or head continuous to distract them.
Since tinnitus is a condition that does not have a single drug or treatment developed for tinnitus alone, patients may find themselves having no choice but to try alternative approaches like acupuncture tinnitus treatment.
Acupuncture tinnitus therapy is a combination of traditional acupuncture techniques, lifestyle changes and herbal medication. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese practice that involves inserting thin needles (with varying depths) into a patient’s skin at very specific points of the body. Although there is no scientific proof or extensive studies that conclude acupuncture tinnitus therapy is effective, many people swear for its therapeutic benefits.
How Does Acupuncture Tinnitus Therapy Work?
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles into the patient’s skin. The needles, which have no meds included, are around 10 times thinner than standard medical needles. Once inserted into the skin, it leads to the release of pain-relieving chemicals called enkephalins and relaxation chemicals called endorphins. The entire process lasts up to 30 minutes, but acupuncture tinnitus therapy consists 10 to 12 sessions.
During the procedure, patients lie down (on the side, face-down or face-up), depending on where the specialist would be inserting the needles. Although the insertion of needle is painless, the patient would feel deep-aching, but bearable, sensation when it reaches the appropriate depth. The patient will need to lie down with the needles on his/her skin for 15-25 minutes for acupuncture tinnitus therapy to work.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, a healthy body has a harmonious balance of the life force called Qi (or chi). When these forces become imbalance, illness occurs. To correct this, 350 acupuncture points in the body are accessed by inserting needles into these points using appropriate combinations. In other countries, acupuncture points are considered the location of muscles, nerves or connective tissues that can be stimulated to correct blood flow.
Will Acupuncture Tinnitus Therapy Get Rid of Ringing Ears?
Studies of acupuncture tinnitus therapy lead to varying results. While some studies conclude that acupuncture is not effective in reducing sounds heard by tinnitus patients, other studies have reported that patients who receive acupuncture at the appropriate pressure points had improvements with their cochlear hair cell function, which in turn, reduces the ringing in the ears or head.
Most doctors do not recommend acupuncture to tinnitus patients if there are other options available. However, if hearing aids, sound maskers and other tinnitus relief methods do not work, alternative treatments like acupuncture may be recommended by physicians.
